Frequently Asked Questions

How should I load the line on the reel?

Preferably with the spool off of the reel. If using a power winder, and a fully assembled reel, GO SLOW. When the reels are new, they need a little time for the axle and spool bushing to break-in. Winding too quickly will create heat which could start to bind the spool. This is the same reason for the lubrication schedule shown below.

How often should I lubricate the reel?
The reels should be cleaned and lubed after the first use, and periodically after that.

What type of grease or oil should be used?

The reels are assembled with Loctite LB8034 High Performance Synthetic Grease, but any brand/type of light to medium weight grease will be fine.

Are the reels convertible to right or left hand wind?

The reels are made "hand specific", either RHW or LHW, and not convertible as assembled. If a reel needs to be converted, it will need to be sent to Bell Reel Co. for the proper parts exchange. Please use the Contact page to inquire about pricing.

Note: There are some early versions out in the wild that are convertible, but only a few.

Is the spring tension adjustable?

Slightly. When assembled, the spring tension is set as tight as possible while still keeping a smooth operation. If a lighter tension is desired, the spring can be slightly softened by flexing it down a couple times while it's installed in the reel. Easy does it, a little flexing goes a long way, and it can't be reversed.

Do you sell blemished or used/pre-owned reels?

Yes, when available. The shopping page will include pre-owned Bell reels, as well as reels that become blemished during manufacturing. Pricing will be adjusted accordingly.
